Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid as alternative
  • Jigger or measuring spoons
  • Citrus juicer manual or handheld
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Small plate for salting rim
  • Rocks glass or margarita glass

Ingredients

  • 2 oz silver (blanco) tequila
  • 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice about 1 large lime
  • ½ oz fresh orange juice optional, for natural sweetness
  • ½ oz agave nectar or 5–8 drops liquid stevia for lower calories
  • 3-4 thin slices fresh jalapeño seeds removed for less heat
  • Ice cubes
  • Coarse sea salt for rim
  • Lime wedge for garnish

Instructions

  • Prepare the Glass: Rub a lime wedge around the rim of your glass. Dip the rim into a small plate of coarse sea salt. Fill the glass with ice and set aside.
Muddle the Jalapeño: In a cocktail shaker, add the jalapeño slices. Gently muddle to release their spice and flavor (avoid over-muddling to prevent bitterness).
Hand rubbing a lime slice along the rim of a glass before dipping it in salt
  • Add Liquids: Pour in the tequila, fresh lime juice, orange juice (if using), and agave nectar or stevia.
Shake: Add a handful of ice to the shaker. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds until chilled.
Fresh squeezed citrus juice creates a brighter and more balanced margarita compared to bottled mixes
  • Strain and Serve: Strain the mixture into your prepared glass over fresh ice.
Garnish: Add a lime wedge or extra jalapeño slice for garnish. Serve immediately.

Cooking Tips

  • Control the Heat: Remove jalapeño seeds for milder spice, or leave them in for extra kick.
  • Make It Extra Skinny: Skip the orange juice and use stevia instead of agave to reduce carbs and sugar.
  • Use Fresh Juice Only: Bottled lime juice will drastically change the flavor. Fresh is essential.
  • Smoky Twist: Add a splash of mezcal for a smoky depth.
  • Chill Your Glass: For an ultra-refreshing drink, chill your glass in the freezer for 10 minutes before serving.
